I’ve called New York home for 6 months.
How can that be possible? It feels like I found an apartment just yesterday and finally learned how to commute from Brooklyn to Manhattan last week…
Here are a few observations and learnings (because I do secretly love a bulleted list) I’ve had over the last 6 months:
• Nicely stacked garbage bags > poorly stacked garbage bags
• Do people clean their dogs’ paws when they go inside the apartment/house after being outside? Or just hope for the best?
• I love the little “buses” that pre-schools use here
• Essentially a bike cart with 6+ seats for the kids that then is pushed all around, it seems like the kids love this too!
• Every bodega has at least one resident cat. Feels like it is mandated? I also love this.
• Airpods/headphones in alllll the time is simply crazy and zaps any sense of connection we have with other people, but also makes living in a place with constant stimulation somehow more manageable at times.
• Washington Square Park is exactly what it feels like in the movies
• I feel so lucky when I get to sit there and sip coffee in the mornings after a run or watch the sky light up orange after work.
• There is an ever present sense of FOMO
• Simply put, something interesting and fun is happening all of the time and you can only make it to a handful of things realistically.
• Scheduling is really hard here (more so compared to other places)
• I feel like there are so many people and friends I keep meaning to connect with, but scheduling is a total headache and often then means you see someone almost 2 months after you had reached out to them.
• I love my bunk bed
• I built a bunk bed to give myself a little more space within my tiny room and am so happy I did EVEN if it feels a little silly at times.
• I’m warming to NYC
• My adjustment hasn’t been the absolute easiest, but I think I’m starting to strike more of a balance and learning the ropes.
• Everyone is really really talented
• Feels special to rub shoulders with people who are so specialized in their craft and forces you to constantly upskill/uplevel too
• Crying on the train isn’t that big of a deal!
